Four Developmental Domains
Developmental domains refer to the different areas of an individual’s life we would consider when we think about their progression.
Personal Social Career/Education | Family
To find out what are these domains are about and what we are doing to develop these areas..
Understanding how to prosocially relate to others, and how they relate to you, will help individuals develop more intimate and supportive relationships in their lives. Also, authentic and healthy relationships between all members in the community, is essential in creating safe, developmental environment.
Respect comes in many forms, from the tone we speak to the body language portrayed. The product of respect should have members of the community feeling they are safe to share their vulnerability. They should not feel judged, ostracised or pointed at. Everyone should feel accepted for who they are regardless of their current condition. Respect is not earned by action, but it is given because of their membership in this community and because they need it to be supported.
Respect is an important fibre of TC. It is the passageway that when opened wide, allows authentic communication to take place and growth following that. Respect drives change and development in TC. It is also a value which we want to see instilled in our boys. Many of them grew up understanding that respect is earned by being better than someone else. This leaves many of them having an unhealthy approach towards being better. With this approach, they will eventually find someone better and lose that respect for themselves. We want them to see respect from another perspective and show them the value of it.
It is more than just being accountable about oneself, it is about being accountable to and for the community that we want to inculcate in the boys. Each boys is also responsible for the rehabilitation of the other members of the TC. They support each other, encourage each other and hold each other accountable.
Responsibility gives a reason for the boys to participate in TC. Without responsibility, participation will be meaningless and robotic. A good understanding of responsibility gives a sense of purpose and hence will bring about a deeper change.
Communication is most effective when it is authentic. This means the speaker sharing must be open, honest and vulnerable. The listener must be attentive, honest, and respectful at the same time.
For transformation to take place, there must first be an awareness of what needs to be changed before steps can be taken. This is when communication, with that authenticity and vulnerability, will bring about that awareness and lead people towards change.
Transformational community is experiential because it happens in real time. It is live. It seizes on those teachable moments. It can happen through the daily routine, the discipline measures or the structured sessions. Anything that happens can be a teachable moment and we want this to be salient to both the staff and the residents.
It is our privilege to see the boys everyday, as compared to counsellors who usually see them once a week. We recognize this advantage we have and capitalize on it. The extensive interaction between the boys and the staff invites teaching moments which are coaching opportunities to effect transformation.
Each and every member of the transformational community is required to participate. It could be in the form of listening, giving feedback, playing sports or maintaining the facilities etc. These actions directly or indirectly sets the environment up necessary for transformation to take place as a community.
Participating together builds that camaraderie and understanding that each member is a part of this community and building a community is a group effort. Staff are not exempted. In fact, onus is on staff to set the pace for the boys by taking the lead and getting involved.
Structure is doing things with a purpose, intention, direction and is systematic. Staff and residents need to understand that the approach towards TC is not a random one. It is a planned and structured place where there is purpose and a mission.
Structure is important for our boys. This was not valued by them and was very much absent from most of their lives. Through structure in a TC, we want to develop a sense that you do need to live the kind of live that they are used to living, one without structure. Instead, we want to help them see the positives for living a life that has structure.
